In this class, we will read a number of novels, plays, poems, short stories, and informational texts with an eye toward “critical analysis” so that students may “deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers” (College Board). For each work, we will consider structure, style, themes, figurative language, etc. After close reading and in-depth consideration of the various elements, students will express their thoughts through a variety of writing assignments including expository, persuasive, compare/contrast, and creative writing. In addition, we will focus on grammar skills, vocabulary, public speaking, project based learning, and voluminous reading assignments.
